Examine the Shine Tap It Be Aware of Cracks Conduct a Test of Water Absorption |
It can be challenging to purchase a natural stone slab. Every piece initially appears exquisite and well-polished, but not all stones are made to last. You can select a slab that will remain sturdy and attractive for many years if you know how to choose stones and perform a quick stone quality check. Here are four simple self-checks.
Let's start with the surface. A high-quality stone will shine like a mirror after a thorough stone process and polish. Clear reflections of surrounding objects ought to be visible. This goes beyond appearances. A shiny surface tends to indicate that the rock is hard, heavy, and wear-resistant. A silky, smooth texture on a natural stone slab is also warm to the touch or even bare feet.
Density can be easily checked with a quick sound test. Use a coin or key to lightly tap the stone. A clear, sharp ring indicates that the stone is solid inside and has no gaps. A dull or hollow sound may indicate low density or internal problems in the stone, which could lead to issues later in the stone cutting process or during regular use.
Though chipped edges and cracks in natural stone are expected, they are undesirable. Cracks are weakening the slab, making it more difficult to work with during the installation process and more likely to break when installed. Stone crack repair is an option, but it is preferable to prevent damaged pieces from the beginning.
Quality can be inferred from stone water absorption. Let after dabbing the surface with some ink or painted water. The stone is better porous and can soak up water if it travels at a fast rate, which will create mould or staining. The stone is better suited for wetter conditions and greater density if it settles.
It is only a matter of minutes to learn to analyze stone quality, but it could save you years of torment. Choosing the proper stone at the start of any custom project, whether a bathroom wall, a kitchen countertop, or whatever, will result in improved functionality, simpler maintenance, and an eternally fashionable appearance.
